Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuhu
Here at Elsie MacGill SS, in Milton, Ontario, our MSA (Muslim Student Association) runs a modest Jumuah prayer. We've seen incredible development over time, alhamdulillah, and we would like to try and make sure that our khutbahs (Friday sermons/speeches) reach and benefit more people, and bring success to other MSAs as well.
In April 2023, we decided to begin holding English language speeches and Islamic reminders during our Jummah prayers. These reminders cover a wide range of topics, including topics that affect teenagers and youth in this day and age. We've seen a gap in the so-called khutbah "market", where resources to find short, common-language khutbahs are far and few, especially for the high-school or college level. We would like to fill this gap and give inspiration, guidance, and ideas to our fellow high school MSAs that would like to begin an English-language Jummah program.
On this site, you will find written copies of all khutbas given at our school, and videos for the ones we were able to record. Included will be successes and ways to improve, for you aspiring khateebs to build upon. I strongly encourage everyone to scrutinize and question these khutbahs; it is important for us to eradicate falsehood so the light of knowledge can prevail.
You can find the khutbas on the sidebar.
Here are the answers to some questions you may have:
Why is having a short khutbah important?
Imagine you're sitting at Jumuah prayers and the imam is just talking for 20+ minutes straight! Regardless of the benefits of the khutbah, or how eloquent the imam is, a large portion of the followers will likely lose attention. It is a confirmed sunnah (way of the Prophet ﷺ) to make the khutbas short. The Prophet ﷺ said:
“A man’s lengthening his prayer and shortening his khutbah is a sign of his understanding (of religion), so make your prayers lengthy and your khutbahs brief, for there is charm in eloquent speech.” Muslim (869).
How can I begin a regular Jumuah prayer at school?
Bring it up at your school's MSA as soon as possible! Friday prayers are an important time to unite the Muslims together, and for many it is the only religious reminder they receive during the week - so try your best to create a Jumuah prayer, using a spare room after school/at break! Not to mention that Jumuah prayers are an obligation on Muslim males, and praying at school is easier than leaving to go and pray.
In order to have a valid Jumuah, you need 3+ people in total to pray together, and a Khutbah is essential, even if it is just the short Arabic parts. Jumuah takes place between the times of Dhuhr and Asr prayers.
Why'd you make this website?
To benefit my young Muslim brothers who are in need of khutbah inspiration or guidance - and to fill the "gap" as mentioned before! Of course, anyone can use my khutbahs for inspiration, examples, taking ideas and concepts, taking topics! You are also allowed to use them as is, or edit them slightly (please notify us before doing so).
I ask Allah to make us all successful in this world and the next, and to guide us. Ameen!
