Writing A Khutbah - Tips

 Giving and writing a Khutbah

Depending on your audience, personal style, and preferences, there are many ways to write a good khutbah. However, there are a few rules that are essential to follow in order to craft a khutbah that will impact the audience in the best manner - and a lot of them have to do with you making things easier for your audience.

1. Do your research! Do not assume anything about Islamic knowledge or make things up, and only speak based on knowledge. Always do research beforehand, researching from the scholars, to ensure that your content is correct and sound. Remember that you will be judged by Allah for your khutbahs (and everything else..), so do not use this position Allah has granted you to spread falsehood, intentionally or unknowingly. Don't take knowledge for laymen or random people (Reddit and Quora are NOT sources!!!) Research's importance cannot be overstated.

2. Short Khutbah: This is an important point, as our Prophet ﷺ commanded us to shorten our khutbahs and lengthen the prayer. Our Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs himself were short and concise, yet contained sufficient information - he ﷺ shortened the khutbahs without compromising the quality of information. A good khutbah is short, and at the same time has enough information to benefit the audience.

3. Relevant: Try writing your khutbahs about topics that specifically impact your audience. For example, writing a khutbah about marriage to a bunch of teens would not make sense, but writing a khutbah about staying strong after Ramadan (during or around the time of Ramadan) would bring a big impact. Don't touch on topics people won't understand, or that they don't need to know.

4. Preparation: Prepare to give the khutbah well in advance, so that you have everything memorized and don't need to look at your notes often; so that you can put spirit into your voice and not sound monotonous; so you can avoid stuttering, filler words, and such; and so you don't miss any points.

And that is my advice to everyone! I hope this helps. Assalamu alaikum.
